Donning the Perfectly Pumpkin Slouch hat is a festive way to join the "Fall=everything pumpkin" movement without having to indulge in pumpkin FLAVORED everything. Designed as my most recent FREE crochet pattern contribution to the Cre8tion Crochet blog, this pattern can easily be worked up in solid colors and without the vine for a classic, cozy and stylishly warm accessory for your head appropriate all the way through Spring (in most areas, lol!)

YARN
Three strands (held together) of #4/worsted weight yarn: approximately 200-350 yds

MATERIALS
L(8mm) and J(6mm) hooks, stitch markers, scissors, tapestry/yarn needle

Toddler: fits up to 16" head circumference
Child: fits up to 18" head circumference
PreTeen-Adult Medium: fits up to 21" head circumference
Adult Large-Adult XL: fits up to 23" head circumference

GAUGE
Rounds 1-4 = 4" diameter

STITCH GUIDE
ch(s) - chain(s), sc - single crochet, hdc - half double crochet, dc - double crochet, st(s) - stitch(es)

NOTES
  • Do not join unless directed to (for most of the pattern you'll be crocheting 'in the round').

PATTERN
Magic ring
Round 1: ch1, 6 scs into ring (6sts), do NOT join
Round 2: sc AND hdc in next st and in each st around (12sts)
Round 3: *sc in next st, 2 hdcs in next st*, repeat from *-* FIVE more times (18sts)
Round 4: *sc in next st, hdc in next st, 2 hdcs in next st*, repeat from *-* FIVE more times (24sts)
Round 5: *sc in next st, hdc in next two sts, 2 hdcs in next st*, repeat from *-* FIVE more times (30sts)
Round 6: *sc in next st, dc in next three sts, 2 dcs in next st*, repeat from *-* FIVE more times (36sts)
**stop here for toddler size and proceed to repeat rounds section**
Round 7: *sc in next st, dc in next four sts, 2 dcs in next st*, repeat from *-* FIVE more times (42sts)
**stop here for child size and proceed to repeat rounds section**
Round 8: *sc in next st, dc in next five sts, 2 dcs in next st*, repeat from *-* FIVE more times (48sts)
**stop here for PreTeen-Adult size and proceed to repeat rounds section**
Round 9: *sc in next st, dc in next six sts, 2 dcs in next st*, repeat from *-* FIVE more times (54sts)
**stop here for Adult Lg-XL size and proceed to repeat rounds section**

Repeat rounds
Toddler: *sc in next st, dc in next five sts*, repeat from *-* around til piece reaches 8", hdc in next two sts, sc in next two sts, sl st in next st, fasten off and weave in ends.
Child: *sc in next st, dc in next six sts*, repeat from *-* around til piece reaches 9", hdc in next two sts, sc in next two sts, sl st in next st, fasten off and weave in ends.
PreTeen-Adult Med: *sc in next st, dc in next seven sts*, repeat from *-* around til piece reaches 10", hdc in next two sts, sc in next two sts, sl st in next st, fasten off and weave in ends.
Adult Lg-Adult XL: *sc in next st, dc in next eight sts*, repeat from *-* around til piece reaches 11", hdc in next two sts, sc in next two sts, sl st in next st, fasten off and weave in ends.

Trim (using ONE strand of #4 weight yarn and L hook)
  • With wrong side facing out reattach yarn w/sl st @fasten off point.
Toddler: *ch2, hdc in each st around (36sts), join w/sl st in first st, turn*, repeat from * - * two more times. Ch1, reverse sc around (36sts), join w/sl st in first st, fasten off and weave in ends.
Child: *ch2, hdc in each st around (42sts), join w/sl st in first st, turn*, repeat from * - * two more times. Ch1, reverse sc around (42sts), join w/sl st in first st, fasten off and weave in ends.
PreTeen-Adult Med: *ch2, hdc in each st around (48sts), join w/sl st in first st, turn*, repeat from * - * four more times. Ch1, reverse sc around (48sts), join w/sl st in first st, fasten off and weave in ends.
Adult Lg-Adult XL: *ch2, hdc in each st around (54sts), join w/sl st in first st, turn*, repeat from * - * four more times. Ch1, reverse sc around (54sts), join w/sl st in first st, fasten off and weave in ends.

Stem (using ONE strand of #4 weight yarn and J hook)
Magic ring
Round 1: ch1, 8 scs in ring, do NOT join (8sts)
Rounds 2-3: sc in each st around (8sts per round)
Round 4: sc dec over next two sts, sc in next two sts, sc dec over next two sts, sc in next two sts (6 sts)
Round 5: sc in each st around (6 sts)
Round 6: 2 scs in next st, sc in next two sts, 2 scs in next st, sc in next two sts (8 sts)
Round 7: 2 scs in next st, sc in next three sts, 2 scs in bext st, sc in next three sts, sl st in next st (10 sts), fasten off and leave long tail for sewing
Sew stem on to top center of hat, fasten off and weave in ends.






Vines (using ONE strand of #4 weight yarn and J hook)
Step 1: ch 35, 2 hdcs in 3rd ch from hook, 2 hdcs in each ch across til one ch remains, 2hdcs + 1 sl st in last st (66 hdcs)

Step 2: attach vine at base of stem w/sl st

Step 3: sl st through the last vine st (sl st you did at end of Step 1) AND around a hat st

Step 4: sl st through next three vine hdcs AND around three hat sts, fasten off and weave in ends

Optional: using needle and length of yarn tack vine down to hat in a couple of spots to keep it from flopping around, fasten off and weave in all ends
