Shelby Shell Mittens~Crochet for a Cause

Join the 2015 #crochetmittendrive , crochet these sassy Shelby Shell Mittens and warm the hearts and hands of those in need.

These mittens were designed for the 2015 Crochet Mitten Drive by Blackstone Designs and coordinate with my Shelby Shell Slouch FREE pattern exclusively found on Cre8tion Crochet, where I'm a regular free pattern contributor.

YARN

Caron Simply Soft (or comparable #4/worsted weight), 80-200yds depending on size.


MATERIALS
Hook: J/10 (6mm)
Scissors, stitch markers, measuring tape

DIFFICULTY
Easy

Toddler(1t-3t)
Child (4t-6y)
Youth (7y-10y)
PreTeen-Adult

GAUGE
(With J hook) 2fans x 3rows=2"x2" square. 4chs=1"

STITCH GUIDE
ch(s) - chain(s), dc - double crochet, st(s) - stitch(es),  sl st - slip stitch, hdc - half double crochet, hdc dec - half double crochet decrease

SPECIAL STITCHES  
Fsc - foundation single crochet (tutorial: http://www.crochetspot.com/how-to-crochet-foundation-single-crochet-fsc/
Fan - (2dc, ch2, 2dc) in designated stitch

NOTES
  • Pattern is written as toddler size with instructions for larger sizes in [ ]'s

PATTERN
(make 2)

Wrist
Row 1: Fsc15 [19,23,27]

Row 2: ch3, turn, dc in first st, fan in next st, *skip next THREE chs, fan in the next st*, repeat from * - * til one st remains, dc in last st, turn (4 fans [5,6,7])

Row 3: Ch3, dc in first st, work a fan into each ch2 SPACE across, dc in last st, turn (4 fans [5,6,7])

Repeat R3 1[2,4,6] more times (adding more rows will make mittens longer), bring ends together to form a tube, ch1, sl st in ends of rows through both sides (two sl sts per dc/turning chain) to create seam. Do not fasten off.

Hand/Fingers
Round 1: ch2, hdc in same st, hdc around, join w/sl st in first st (do not turn) (16sts[20, 24, 28])

Rounds 2-3[4, 5, 6]: repeat R1 (18sts[23, 28, 33])

Round 4[5, 6, 7]: sl st in next 2sts[3, 3, 4], ch 2[3, 3, 4], skip next 14sts[17, 22, 25], sl st in next st (creates the thumb opening and finger opening), ch1, turn, hdc around finger opening (larger of the two openings) (including into each ch of the ch2[3, 3, 4]), do not join (17sts[21, 25, 29]

Rounds 5[6, 7, 8] - 7[8, 9, 10]: hdc around (17sts[21, 25, 29])

Round 8[9, 10, 11]: hdc dec over next two sts, hdc in next 7sts[9, 10, 13], hdc dec over the next two sts, hdc in last 6sts[8, 9, 12]. (15sts[19, 23, 27])

Round 9[10, 11, 12]: hdc dec over next two sts, hdc in next 6sts[8, 9, 12], hdc dec over the next two sts, hdc in last 5sts[7, 8, 11]. (13sts[17, 21, 25])

Round 10[11, 12, 13]: hdc dec over next two sts, hdc in next 5sts[7, 8, 11], hdc dec over the next two sts, hdc in last 4sts[6, 7, 10]. (11sts[15, 19, 23])

Round 11[12, 13, 14]: TWO hdc dec over next four sts, hdc in next 2sts[4, 6, 8], TWO hdc dec over next four sts, hdc in last st[3sts, 5, 7]. (7sts[11, 15, 19])

**STOP here for Toddler size, fasten off and weave in ends, then proceed to thumb section**

Rounds *[13, 14, 15] - *[*, 16, 17] (only ONE round for Child size): hdc around. Fasten off and leave long tail, using tapestry/yarn needle whip stitch the top opening closed, fasten off and weave in ends.

Thumb
Round 1: re-attach yarn w/sl st in designated stitch <see pic>, hdc in same st, hdc around thumb hole (including into each ch of the ch2[3, 3, 4], do not join. (6sts[9, 9, 12])

Thumb Round 1: re-attach yarn

Round 2: hdc around, do not join (6sts[9, 9, 12]). **stop here for Toddler and Child sizes, proceed to thumb finishing instructions**

Rounds 3-*[*, 4, 4] (for Youth and Adult sizes ONLY): repeat round 2

Finishing (ALL sizes): *hdc dec over next two sts, hdc in next st*, repeat from * - * around (4sts[6, 6, 8]), fasten off leaving long tail, using tapestry/yarn needle weave in and out of each stitch at top opening, pull tight to gather closed, fasten off and weave in ends.

  1. Silly question, but to start these, is row one the slip stitch and also a row of single crochet?

    1. The first row is a row of fsc sts (foundation single crochet stitches). I've updated the pattern with w tutorial link for the fsc.
